First up, TPM dials up the snark to 1000:
That one needs no additional snark from me, I think. The North Iowa Tea Party has put up a billboard in Mason City, Iowa, comparing Hitler, Lenin and President Obama, reports the Associated Press. The bottom of the sign reads: "RADICAL LEADERS PREY ON THE FEARFUL & NAIVE," while the words "National Socialism" appear above Hitler, "Marxist Socialism" above Lenin and "Democrat Socialism" above Obama. The word "change" is stamped on each picture.
A spokesperson for the Tea Party Patriots told the AP the sign isn't appropriate. Meanwhile, North Iowa Tea Party co-founder Bob Johnson says the sign's pictures may be getting in the way of its intended message -- presumably a level-headed and civil comparison of Obama to Hitler and Lenin.
It ties in rather nicely with one of Ed Brayton's recent discoveries:
That's talent, that is!Balko put this on his Facebook page and I had to look it up. At Andrew Breitbart's Big Peace website. On Saturday at 3:14 pm, a headline and article (by uber-moron Michael Moriarty) on the front page of the site declared Obama to be "Americas blind fuhrer." A mere 25 hours later, a new headline declared Obama to be Neville Chamberlain. You gotta hand it to Obama. He is simultaneously a communist, a fascist and a duly elected leader appeasing...well, himself I suppose.
I suppose it's too much to ask of the rabid right, but some logical coherence would be nice. And could they please just pick one (1) comparison to a horrible figure of the 20th century and stick with it? When they try to mix together so many different ideologies, they just kind of make themselves look indecisive.
And, finally, a quote you should stick in your pocket, ready to whip out when dealing with a homophobic assmunch:
Beauty. I fear its subtleties will be lost upon the frothing fundies, but it's certainly worth a shot. And it can be reconfigured into a variety of useful forms, as DrugMonkey proved in that post. There's a quote that will show up on the rotator over there on the left that I found at Ed Brayton's place. It reflects the confusion that the reasonable heterosexual man typically feels over the (US) right-wing idealogue talking points about "making" people gay. You know, by extending them rights, admitting that they exist, refusing to bash them, etc, the social fabric is apparently constructing gay people out of heterosexual cloth. This rejoinder is pitch perfect.I'm not going to say that all homophobes are closeted homosexuals. I just want to point out that anyone who thinks social pressure is all that keeps straight men from forsaking women to pursue other men has no idea what it's like to be a straight man.
