Dumbfuckery du Jour

Crooks and Liars beat me to it.

Barbour: 'The Mississippi Coast is Beautiful' 'Come on Down!' - Except for Those Thousands of Dead Fish

Yup.

Absolutely fucking gorgeous.

And if you haven't seen it yet, don't miss PZ's post on BP's emergency response plan, which uses a site selling this kitsch as a "primary equipment provider":

Looks like they were planning to use gumballs for top kill.  Good to know.

Back in the 1980s I was a hardware engineer working on flight simulators installed in Pensacola, Florida. I was in charge of the "tidying up" task of cleaning up what felt like a thousand exceptions to the Navy's acceptance of the simulators. This was "low priority", so I'd fly down on a Friday, work the weekend, and fly home Monday (to Northern California).

The students using the simulators worked Sunday evenings, so for better or for worse, I was free then. (No flights back home so late.) So in the summer I'd drive out to Pensacola beach, on the barrier islands, and walk the shore at sunset. Soft sand, gentle surf, the water turning all kinds of interesting crystal colors in the sunset, plovers running into the surf and out of it catching things to eat...

It crushes me to think of these things destroyed by nothing more than corporate greed. It just crushes me.

I thought they were done with Top Kill, and had gone on to Top Suck. Seems like it would be hard to jam stuff down the pipe when there's a big sucky thing clamped to it. (Hope I'm not being gratuitously technical there.)

I have some fond memories of St. Petersburg, Karen. I doubt it will be quite so lovely if that oil slick ends up there.

Trying gumballs would have been no worse than what they've tried so far.
