Happy Hour Discurso

Today's opining on the public discourse.

Apparently, the Justice Department doesn't have a "don't ask, don't tell" policy:

I realize it’s foolish of me to be surprised by anything the Bush administration does, but Hagen’s case is rather extraordinary. Respected lawyer, impeccable credentials Republican loyalist, outstanding performance evaluations — everything the Bush gang could hope for. But then the graduate of Pat Robertson’s college heard Hagen might be gay, and despite the requests of Hagen’s supervisors, Hagen was gone.

Carpetbagger's theory is that she was fired due to teh gay. But me, I'm plumping for the competence - Lord knows, Bush don't want nobody around knows what they're doing. That would be too great a threat to his ability to fuck everything up spectacularly.

Speaking of incompetents, remember when I told you about Wal-Mart's brilliant plan to demand a severely disabled woman's trust? Well, it appears they're not liking the bad publicity so much:

Fortunately, Wal-Mart, which has been known to have more than a few public-relations problems, is not immune to public outrage.

Yesterday, the commercial behemoth reversed course and announced that Shank can keep the trust to pay for her medical care.

Amazing how a little public outrage can make a corporation behave itself. But rest easy, my darlings: it's only a matter of time before they pull another spectacularly stupid stunt, like, oh, say, taking candy from babies.

For your reading pleasure, Carpetbagger and Tristero both recommend you pick up Glenn Greenwald's latest:

Our favorite blogger-author, Glenn Greenwald, has a new [book] coming out and it's a doozy. He dissects the rightwing mythology of masculine, warrior values (and the ineffectual response of the Democrats) in detailed, ruthless fashion as only the Glennzilla can. I'm just about halfway through it right now and will have a much more thorough review soon. In the meantime, take my word for it, you need to read this book before we swing into the Flyboy Deification 24/7.

"The Glennzilla." Heh. Me likes. Look, it's called Great American Hypocrites, it's by the Glennzilla, and two of my most favoritest bloggers recommend it. Therefore, it's a must-have.

And, just for fun, pop over and see cartoon PZ debate cartoon loon Ben Stein.

Laters.
