And the News for Republicons Gets Much Worse...

That rattling sound you hear is a Republicon incumbent shaking in his very expensive shoes:

The Senate race in Georgia, once left for dead, just got a lot more interesting, as former state Rep. Jim Martin has won the Democratic primary runoff against DeKalb County CEO Vernon Jones.

DSCC Chairman Chuck Schumer on Martin's victory:

“Georgians chose an impressive candidate today who has the experience and vision to change the direction of our nation. As a public servant under both a Democratic and a Republican Governor, Jim has a proven record of working across party lines, and he will be an effective and independent voice for Georgia families. This is a winnable race.”

With 97% of districts reporting, Martin leads 60% to 40%. That's a commanding victory which should inspire confidence in Martin's candidacy for the general election, in which he faces a tough but viable battle against incumbent Senator Saxby Chambliss. Martin is a candidate we can be proud of as progressives and Democrats, and he will be a serious and legitimate challenger to the senior Senator.

You think that's bad? It gets worse:

The Montana Republican party is saying "every man for himself" in the wake of a new poll showing the strength of Brian Schweitzer's popularity and 'the Democratic brand'.

According to State Republican Chairman Erik Iverson:

"Part of the message is you can't let the Democrats nationalize the race or even make it a statewide referendum. We're telling each candidate their race needs to be localized and not them versus Brian Schweitzer or them versus the national Democratic Party.

"The reality of the situation is the Republican brand nationwide isn't very strong right now. I don't want them losing because they let their opponents make the race about George Bush or the Iraq war or any other national or state race."

Hear that? They're having to circle the wagons 'round piddly little local issues, because even venturing as far afield as their own damned state is going to moider 'em. Wasn't it just a few years ago that the Republicon party was a juggernaut that couldn't be stopped?

My, how times change when the fuckwits in office push their fuckwittery just a wee bit too far. It may indeed be time for a new mascot. Acseely has some excellent recommendations - I suggest not taking a drink right as you click over.

You know, I don't know what it is, but I just get this feeling we could see Republicons falling over tick-tick-tick like dear little dominoes this November. Which will suit them just fine: they do so love playing the martyr card.

Well, we'd hate to disappoint, now wouldn't we? Let's hand them the kind of defeat they could really get to fainting over.

Yet, it's the local issues that might well help them out - people tend to think local about everything (how does issue 'X' affect *me*?).

One of the reasons I refused to vote for the democrats for several election cycles (92-00) was that they would allow seats at the local level (school board, city council, state representative, etc.) go to the republicans *unopposed*! I'm not asking that they put in a ton of resources to take a state house seat, but at least put someone's name on the ballot!

Indeed, look at what the shift to all republican school boards has done in places like Kansas, Texas and Florida!

Just because the republicans are hunkering down is no reason to stop pummeling them, and I am willing to bet that they are just as poor at managing local issues as national issues, and we should continue taking the fight to them! (Local jobs - where were you when Wal-Mart came in an destroyed the local economy? A trained seal could do it!)

Apologies for the exclamation point ratio...
