I think that first article's analysis missed the point - this wasn't a defeat for Harper. What he did was avoid defeat by calling the election early. If this election had happened when it was originally scheduled, about six months from now, it's quite probable that the Conservatives would have lost.

That's why he's suddenly interested in not spending more C$ on an election.
