Friday Favorite Season

Autumn isn't mine.

The damned leaves are already turning. Whole branches have blushed red or are cowering yellow. When a stiff wind blows, a few premature demisers make their final dive into the pond. And it's bloody cold already.

That means winter's coming, with its short, gray days and its icy rain. The rare bit of snow we get here will look pretty dusting the trees, granted - but only so long as I don't have to drive in it. People in this city lose their minds when there's a snowflake or two on the road.

And summer's nice, but some days I feel like I've been turning on a rotisserie spit. The days are insufferably long - for a nocturne like me, having only a few hours of night is depressing.

Give me spring, damn it.

I love spring. I love that special shade of green you get with young, vigorous leaves popping out everywhere. Sunlight has an altogether different quality beaming down through newly-verdant trees. All those flowers blooming, all the gorgeous smells, the sensation of sudden life after a dead season - it's fantastic. Spring invigorates me. Spring makes me feel all bubbly inside, and gets me outside to play.

I'm already looking forward to it. But I know a few of you are probably fanatics for fall, wistful for winter, or suckers for summer. Make your best case in comments.

Come to Australia, were just starting spring here, and as I won a HUGE meat tray at the Pub tonight I have more than enough for a BBQ or two :-)

I think we even have a bottle of Mezcal somewhere :-)

I'm a spring darling myself. There's something about the first day you go out without a coat that's liberating and re-energizing.

When did you move to the UK? We've had rain all summer so it won't be too much of a change. If anything, it'll be an improvement when its cold enough to wear a real coat.

I wouldn't dream of arguing with your seasonal aesthetic. There is something in us that resonates with certain sounds, patterns, rhythms, smells, colors...

Me, I'm a Fall guy. No pun intended. And I'm pretty fond of winter. Gives me a kick, riding my bike when most people complain about walking to the car.

Summer's too frakkin' hot. I don't dissipate heat very well.

I'm probably fondest of autumn, but I really like spring and winter both.

(I seem to enjoy a lot of songs relating to the cooler seasons, even though they're sometimes a bit melancholy. Some of my favourite songs are "Forever Autumn", "Hazy Shade of Winter" and "California Dreamin'". Gee, that'll make me sound old - but those were written when I was quite young; I got to like them later.)

Summer here is too hot for me - I don't do well in hot weather.

And winter here is not a "dead season" - most native plants don't lose their leaves. It doesn't get cold enough to snow; you're lucky if you even get a hint of frost on the very coldest mornings.
